On Saturday, 29th January 2011, Kenyatta University Chess Club played host to a day-long tournament dubbed ‘KU Grand Masters Weekend’ at their Student and Business Centre on the main campus on Thika Road.

The tournament was played in a seven round Swiss system and 28 students participated, of which there were 3 women players (from main and Ruiru campuses).
Victor Hongo won the men’s section and was crowned Grand Master with a final score of 7/7 points, while Juliet Kamiri from Ruiru campus was crowned Grand Mistress with a score of 5/7 points. The Grand Master went home richer by KShs 500 while the Grand Mistress took away KShs 300. Second and third prizes for the men’s section were KShs 350 and 250 respectively.
The tournament’s arbiters were Jacktone Mony and Rehema Maria.
