Former National Junior Chess Champion, Arthur Ssegwanyi and reigning Junior Champion, Haruna Nsubuga are on a roll in the ongoing National Chess Championship after the two beat Farouk Fauza and Emmanuel Mwaka respectively to get to 5.5 points out of 6.
The two surprise leaders are unbeaten after 6 rounds and are ahead of the chasing pack by a full point, with only 4 rounds to go. Two games were played today (Saturday, 12th November 2011) and two more will be played tomorrow (Sunday, 13th November 2011).
In third position is Olympian Bob Bibasa with 4.5 points after he outwitted Mathias Ssonko. He is tied with Rajab Kamoga who beat James Nkemba and Simon Gonza who beat Lenard Chabo.
Defending Champion, Harold Wanyama is still struggling after he drew with fast rising Daniel Bagadde in the sixth round to get to 4 points, 1.5 points behind the leaders.
In the seventh round due to be played Sunday morning, Ssegwanyi is up against Nsubuga as Bibasa plays Farouk Fauza and Kamoga takes on Gonza. The winner between Ssegwanyi and Nsubuga’s game will be favoured to win the tournament.
The event’s winner will automatically qualify to be part of Uganda’s team at the next Olympiad in Turkey next year.
