The Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) has embarked on a major drive to encourage and support development of upcountry chess clubs in a bid to spread the game of chess beyond Kampala and across the entire country.

Support has taken the form of donation of chess equipment like standard tournament-size chess boards and chess books (theory) to organised groups that have demonstrated enthusiasm and ability to take the game to another level. Kasese, Mbarara and Ndejje are some of the first upcountry towns to benefit from this initiative.

UCF handed over two chess sets to each of the representatives from Kasese, Mbarara and Ndejje in April 2011. They in turn each promised to put the sets to good use by ensuring that the game is played in bars and other recreational avenues.
