Chess players in Uganda are bracing themselves for action on the boards in the Zabasajja Memorial Rapid Chess Championship due to be held on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th April 2012 at Pope Paul Memorial Hotel in Rubaga.
The 8 round Rapid event with 4 games to be played per day will have each player given 50 minutes to complete their game, a maximum of one hour, fourty minutes per game. The event is for the fifth year running sponsored by Eng. FM Andrew Naimanye in memory of legendary Zabasajja.
He was Uganda’s national chess champion for a record 9 times and represented the country at a number of World Olympiads in the 80s and 90s where he put up splendid displays.
There will be cash prizes at stake for the winners. Local stars Haruna Nsubuga, Harold Wanyama, Bob Bibasa and Geoffrey Kanduho are expected to lead the challenge in the event.
The tournament will also act as a timely curtain raiser ahead of the third and last phase of the Olympiad qualifiers due to be held on consecutive weekends of 28-29 April, 1, 5-6 and 12-13 May 2012.
